Erika’s a beauty

21 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
ERIKA Fox had never considered becoming a model before she was discovered on the streets of Melbourne almost two years ago.Now she is in with a chance to take out the third-largest beauty pageant in the world.
Erika, 18, will depart for Spain today, where she will represent Australia in the 40th Miss Intercontinental pageant.
“Since I was little, because I was tall for my age, everyone always said I should become a model, but I’d never thought anything of it,” she said.
“So when this opportunity came about I thought ‘why not?’”
Erika was walking down Bourke Street in Melbourne when her now agent, Paul Roberts, tapped her on the shoulder and gave her his business card.
But it wasn’t until a year later that she took up the opportunity to begin her modelling training with Primodel.
Since then, the Mildura Senior College year 12 student, who moved to Mildura from Werrimull to complete her VCE, has been juggling her studies and modelling work.
“About a month ago my agent called and said that I was chosen to do this out of about 3000 girls,” she said.
“Each week I’ve been driving down to Melbourne with my family and I’ve been doing different training, which is completely different to my modelling training.
“I’ve been trained how to talk, how to smile, two different walks – one for the dress and one for the bikini, how to stand and how to sit.”
Erika will compete against 70 other women for the Miss Intercontinental crown, $25,000 and the chance to live in Germany for a year with all expenses paid.
At the pageant’s coronation ball, she will wear a $3000 gown by Melbourne-based designer Loretta Adams.
“If this takes me somewhere, I’d love to model when I finish school, but I’d also be happy to do something in make-up artistry,” she said.

Matthew Anderson, director of Chadwick Model Management, said he was stoked to have uncovered "rare" gems in a casting call for everyday people at MSFW.The "Cinderella" models were spied at a Melbourne Spring Fashion Week "real people" parade on Monday but left before a talent scout could meet them.
"It was fantastic to find so much talent at a casting call, that is so rare," he said.
Melton schoolgirl Tailah Foley, 17, and Malaysian-born beauty Shhobaa Palan, 23, will take to the catwalk as part of the Target fashion parade during MSFW.
The girls have been plucked from obscurity, much like Jessica Hart, who was discovered at Eastland Shopping Centre.
Foley said she had "one crazy day", but it was not the first time she had been in the spotlight. At 16, the leggy teen was spied shopping on Bourke St by a savvy model scout from PriModels.
The agency took her to New York for a 10-day sweep of the top agencies.
Elite Models expressed interest in Tailah but she'd have had to leave school and stay in New York for six months. Tailah decided school should come first.
"I wanted to finish school so I didn't end up taking the deal," she said. "Compared to today, New York was nothing. I would love to finish school and work as a model in Melbourne."
Gorgeous international accounting student Shhobaa Palan woke with a start. "My brother woke me up this morning and was like 'You are in the paper'," she said.
Shhobaa had planned to volunteer as an usher until the "real people" search caught her eye.
"I never expected this," she said. "All I was thinking when I was on the runway was don't fall, don't fall!"
Tailah's parents were thrilled. "Our Tailah is just gorgeous, we love her to bits," said proud dad Darryl.

Primodels good reviews models Melbourne Toni Mitchell

Ballarat girl to compete in world beauty competition

28 Jan, 2012 12:03 AM
EVER since she was a child, Toni Mitchell has dreamed of being a model. Now the Ballarat 19-year-old gets her chance on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Ms Mitchell is Australia’s representative at the prestigious Top Model of the World pageant, where she will join 43 other contestants from around the globe in Dortmund, Germany.
The former student of Phoenix P-12 Community College, once known as Sebastopol College, said she was selected to represent her country by model agent Paul Roberts from Primodels.
“I’ve always had a drive to do it and now it’s really happening. I’m so excited,” Ms Mitchell, a sales assistant at Godfreys, said.
“It’s a bit shocking too. I’ve never done a pageant before either so it’s a lot on my plate. I’m nervous, but so excited at the same time.”
Ms Mitchell, who will jet overseas for the first time, said the pageant could help kick-start a modelling career.
“I am hoping to win, I will try my hardest. It’s an opportunity to go over there and just to do it is going to be great in itself,” she said.
“If you win there is about $20,000 worth of prizes and you get to live over in Germany for the year and model under the World Beauty Organisation. It’s a pretty big deal.”
The final curtain will fall on this year’s pageant on March 10.
